Belize

December 16 - 25, 2012

Our first vacation together...we arrived in Belize City on December 16 and took a water taxi to Caye Caulker. It was dark when we arrived and we hopped a golf cart (there are no cars on the island) to what would be our home for the next four days, Colinda Cabanas, at the end of the island. The owner, Colin, gave us an orientation of the island which is walkable in about 20 minutes. That Monday we had nothing planned so we explored the island: food, drinks, and ocean. We loved the Cuban coffee and Fry Jacks for breakfast and fresh grilled lobster for dinner. In fact we ate an incredible amount of lobster and conch ceviche in those four days, met many nice people traveling through (mostly from Canada and the UK), watched the movie Ted at an outdoor theater, and completely relaxed. The split at the end of the island opposite where we were staying is where people gather to drink, swim, and soak up the sun.

Tuesday through Friday were dedicated to diving: I completed my checkout dives the first two days, and then we did our first dive together on Thursday at Turneffe Atoll. Friday, December 21, we woke up early for our last dive at the Blue Hole. The last day of the Mayan calendar turned out to be beautiful...we watched the sunrise from the boat on our way to the first dive.

Saturday morning we caught the water taxi off the island and headed inland to San Ignacio where we stayed at the Midas Resort. That evening we visited Green Iguanas and ate delicious Indian food (Devin drank 14 year old rum). We spent Sunday in a cave, Actun Tunichil Muknai, that was used by the Maya as a ceremonial place to sacrifice humans to the Gods...beautiful and amazing. On Christmas Eve we took a shuttle across the border to Guatemala to visit Tikal, a classic Maya city in the jungle...rich in history, spider and howler monkeys, birds, and coatis (raccoon like animal). On Christmas Day we traveled back to San Francisco. Amazing trip :)
